Unity advocated, defenses urged against potential threats from China, as per Lai's proposal
In a gathering in Taipei, President William Lai of the Executive Yuan, the executive branch of the Republic of China (Taiwan), addressed the current security situation, emphasising its growing severity.
Lai stated that the Chinese Communist Party is seeking to alter the cross-strait "status quo," a move that could pose a significant threat to Taiwan's democracy and freedom, and challenge the democratic world. He did not mention any new tactics employed by Beijing, but highlighted the ongoing military incursions near Taiwan and the use of "gray-zone" tactics in the Taiwan Strait.
The President also pointed out Beijing's engagement in cognitive warfare against Taiwan, a strategy aimed at influencing public opinion and decision-making processes. He thanked military officers, particularly those guarding Taiwan amid Chinese incursions, for their role in defending Taiwan's survival and development.
In response to these threats, Lai's administration has been focusing on improving service members' salaries and benefits, boosting defense spending, and increasing investments to strengthen military capabilities. The gathering in Taipei was also focused on discussing measures to strengthen Taiwan's defense capabilities.
Meanwhile, the Taiwanese military is actively engaged in defending the nation's airspace and territorial waters against Chinese incursions. Lai emphasised the importance of strong defense capabilities and national unity for Taiwan.
On a related note, Chinese authorities are scheduled to hold a military parade in Beijing tomorrow, with leaders of Russia, North Korea, and Iran reportedly attending. This event further underscores the need for Taiwan to remain vigilant and prepared.
Lai concluded his speech by emphasising the importance of social solidarity and preparedness, both in military and societal terms, as Taiwan faces increasingly severe security challenges.
