University of Kentucky cheerleader Laken Snelling, aged 21, is reported to have withdrawn from the institution following the devastating discovery of her infant son's lifeless body in a trash bag inside a closet.
In a shocking turn of events, Laken Snelling, a senior at the University of Kentucky, has been charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant.
The tragedy unfolded on August 27, when cops swooped on a property in Lexington, Kentucky, after receiving reports of an unresponsive baby. The baby was found dead in a closet, and further investigation revealed that the baby was Laken Snelling's son.
Laken Snelling, 21, was arrested on Sunday and charged with the aforementioned crimes. She pleaded not guilty to the charges on September 2.
The death of Laken Snelling's child remains a mystery, and coroners are conducting a thorough and methodical death investigation to ensure all facts are carefully considered. The autopsy conducted on the baby found in a bag was ruled inconclusive.
Laken Snelling admitted to cops that she tried to conceal the birth by cleaning evidence and putting the cleaning items in a bag, along with her newborn child.
The responsibility for investigating the circumstances of the death of Laken Snelling's child lies with the police and relevant child protective services.
It's not known if Laken Snelling was kicked out of the university or if she left on a voluntary basis. However, a spokesperson for the institution confirmed that Laken Snelling is no longer attending the University of Kentucky.
Prior to her arrest, Laken Snelling was a member of the university's stunt team, an athletic troupe that performs routines such as pyramids, jumps, and tumbling. The representative also confirmed that Laken Snelling is no longer part of the stunt team.
The arrest occurred just six days after the semester for the new academic year started at the University of Kentucky, where more than 35,000 students attend.
Laken Snelling, who majored in interdisciplinary disability studies, is one of the top colleges in the US. Currently, she is under house arrest at her parents' home in Jefferson County, Tennessee. The preliminary hearing for her case is scheduled for September 26.
