Unlawful Car Races in Bremerhaven Halted by Local Police

In an incident reported by Bremerhaven Police on Monday night, two men, aged 23 and 24, were charged for allegedly participating in an illegal street racing event. The vehicles involved, a VW Phaeton and a Mercedes E-Model, were impounded by the police and their drivers were required to surrender their driver's licenses.

The incident occurred on the route from Langener Landstraße towards Cherbourger Straße in Bremerhaven. According to the police, the cars were driving northbound, diagonally offset with a few meters between them, and appeared to be moving at significantly excessive speed.

Upon catching up to the speeders at a red light, the police found that the engines and brakes of the cars were severely overheated. As a result, both vehicles were seized as evidence and towed away.

The punishment for organizing or participating in an unauthorized street race, driving at inappropriate speed, or driving in a grossly negligent and reckless manner can result in imprisonment of up to two years or a fine. However, no specific section of the Criminal Code was mentioned in the article that pertains to this incident.

If personal injury occurs during such races, a prison sentence of up to ten years can be imposed. The Bremerhaven Police remind the public that illegal races in traffic are a criminal offense and are punishable by severe penalties according to the Criminal Code (§315d).
