In the ongoing conflict in Yemen, a troubling development has emerged as the Houthis, a rebel group controlling much of northwestern Yemen since 2014, have raided United Nations offices in the capital Sanaa. As a result, at least eleven UN staff members, along with personnel from national and international NGOs, civil society organisations, and diplomatic missions, have been detained.

Ammar Ammar, a spokesperson for UNICEF, has confirmed the detainment of some of the agency's staffers. UNICEF is seeking more information from the Houthis regarding the fate of these individuals. The UN's food, health, and children's agencies have been targeted in the recent raids, raising concerns about the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The Houthis have been conducting repeated strikes on shipping in the Red Sea and Israel, and their relationship with Iran is well-documented. On Thursday, rebel prime minister Ahmed al Rahawi and a number of other ministers were reportedly killed, according to the Houthis.

In response to these actions, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) carried out a significant strike against strategic targets of the Houthi regime in Yemen on Friday. The Houthi crackdown against the UN and other international organisations in Yemen has been ongoing, and this latest incident underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

As the situation in Yemen continues to escalate, it is crucial that all parties involved prioritise the safety and wellbeing of civilians, including UN staff members and humanitarian workers. The international community must work together to ensure that aid can continue to reach those who need it most, and that the people of Yemen are not forgotten in the midst of this devastating conflict.
