Unpredictable Performance Concerns: Belief of Personal Incapacitation Expressed
In a recent round, I found myself teeing off without the usual competition, a departure from my usual game. However, the lack of competition left the round feeling somewhat uninteresting, as I've always enjoyed having something to play for, such as a card, during a golf game.
My game has been far from perfect lately. Duck hooks and shanks have become all too common, causing concern not only for my score but also for being labelled a "handicap bandit". My handicap has been on the rise, reaching seven to nine, a state I now refer to as being 'unhandicapable' due to my scoring becoming too erratic.
This persistent hook in my game has been a source of frustration, and my playing partner even suggested I take a break from the course to work on my swing. My friend, in a bid to help, suggested I practice hitting fades with a 7-iron to improve my handicap.
As I contemplate when it might be appropriate to step away from competitions and stop putting in cards, I find myself seeking thoughts on the right and fair thing to do. The topic of handicaps in golf is a debated one, and I'm not alone in my struggle. Golfers at all levels, from enthusiasts to professionals, might face similar challenges.
There seems to be a lack of information about people in a similar situation dealing with irregular cuts in golf. Yet, it's clear that many golfers are seeking solutions to improve their game.
In light of this, I propose a solution that could provide some relief. I suggest allowing sufferers to 'pause' their handicap with a letter of support from their PGA pro. This would give me, and others in a similar situation, the time to work on our games without penalising our handicaps.
Moreover, I believe there should be an asterisk next to my handicap in the app for anyone going through a bout of the hooks. This would serve as a reminder to others that my score might not accurately reflect my true ability during this challenging period.
Despite the poor start, I find solace in the fact that even after a difficult beginning, I can still claw back with a good run of scoring. It's these moments that keep me coming back to the course, hoping for a day when the hooks are a thing of the past.
