Unpredictable Performance Concerns: User Expresses Doubt About Current Capabilities Due to Inconsistency

In the world of golf, a popular topic that sparks much debate is the issue of handicaps. Jean Heidbüchel, an individual who has recently faced challenges with his golf game, finds himself caught in this discussion. He has struggled to enjoy a round of golf without a card or competition, yet the concern of manipulation by some golfers and the question of when and how often to put a card in have left him contemplating his actions.

Heidbüchel's game is marred by destructive shots such as duck hooks and shanks. His playing partner suggested a break from the course due to a persistent hook in his game, but Heidbüchel finds solace in the competition and the focus that playing with a card provides.

However, Heidbüchel is not a fiercely competitive person or a big punter. He enjoys having something to play for, and the challenge of maintaining a handicap adds to the enjoyment of the game for him. Yet, he is concerned about being labelled a "handicap bandit."

His scoring has become too erratic, leading him to question his "unhandicapable" status. Many of his scorecard entries start with a 9 due to 'picked up' entries, and his handicap has been increasing rapidly, reaching numbers like 7 to 10. This has led him to consider stopping the practice of putting cards in and even stopping playing in competitions.

He is seeking advice on what the right and fair thing to do is regarding his handicap during this difficult period. He proposes an asterisk next to handicaps in apps for golfers experiencing a bout of hooks, or allowing golfers to "pause" their handicap with a letter of support from their PGA pro, much like a sick note from a doctor.

Despite the challenges, Heidbüchel remains hopeful. He has taken advice from his friend to practice hitting fades with a 7-iron to improve his golf game. He is determined to find a solution that respects the rules of the game while allowing him to continue enjoying his passion for golf.
