Unseen Vibrations from the Pacific: Leyda's Stealthy Shift in Sauvignon Blanc Production
Nestled in the San Antonio Valley of Chile, the Leyda Valley is becoming renowned for its distinctive Sauvignon Blanc wines. Two pioneering vineyards, Viña Leyda and Casa Marin, have been instrumental in shaping the regional voice of this varietal since 1998.
Viña Leyda, with its first vines planted in the valley the same year, has established itself as a leader in the production of Sauvignon Blanc. Guided by principles of purity and enlightenment, the winery's Lot 4 is a testament to these values. Grapes for Lot 4 are grown seven miles from the sea, in granite and silt soils, and are cultivated using the Sancerre clone.
Lot 4 presents a vertical profile, with aromas of grapefruit, lime, and white pepper. The wine is pressed in whole bunches and fermented in concrete eggs and untoasted foudres, lending it a chalky texture and a mineral finish. This energetic white wine offers a crunchy profile, making it a standout in any tasting.
Viviana Navarrete, head winemaker at Viña Leyda, skillfully utilizes the varietal's particular subtleties to produce three different expressions. Her wisdom, combined with the touch of the Pacific, has resulted in a Sauvignon Blanc that speaks of its place of origin with quiet precision. Time will show that this approach yields a wine that is both unique and representative of the Leyda Valley.
Casa Marin, another pioneer in the region, has been producing Sauvignon Blanc since 1998. The Coastal Vineyards Garuma, one of their offerings, is an austere, saline Sauvignon Blanc, aged for seven months on its lees. This wine showcases notes of lemon verbena, green chilli, and coastal breezes, and boasts a creamy but taut texture.
Navarrete remarks that in Leyda, they are blazing a quiet but confident trail for Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. As these wineries continue to push the boundaries of what is possible with this varietal, the Leyda Valley's reputation as a premier Sauvignon Blanc region is sure to continue growing.
