O'Hare International Airport Undergoes Major Expansion with New Terminal D
After more than two decades, O'Hare International Airport in Chicago is undergoing its first significant expansion. The $1.3-billion (€1.1-billion) project, set for completion by late 2028, will see the addition of a new terminal, Terminal D.
The design of Terminal D is by architecture studio SOM, with additional collaborations from Ross Barney Architects, Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects, and Arup. The development project was marked by a ceremony on 18 August 2025, attended by airline executives from both American and United.
The expansion is focused on improving the passenger experience. The building's organic, flowing forms are a tribute to the "oxbow bends of Midwestern rivers," creating a bright, easy-to-navigate environment. Live planting and shrubbery are included in the design, adding a touch of nature to the terminal.
Terminal D will offer 19 new gates, mezzanine levels, retail spaces, and seating beside a vast glass curtain wall. The terminal will also link to the main airport via a new space called O'Hare Global Terminal, reflecting O'Hare's status among the world's busiest and best-connected airports.
The design continues the use of a regional vernacular, with skylit spaces and orchard-inspired columns. Heating and cooling costs for the terminal are expected to be slashed by 50% due to innovative roof supports. The terminal's carbon footprint will also be reduced, making it a more environmentally friendly addition to the airport.
The project is expected to generate around 4,000 construction jobs. United States Senator Tammy Duckworth has hailed the expansion of Terminal D at O'Hare International Airport as an "historic expansion." The terminal, which was originally named Orchard Field airport until 1949 and was later renamed in honor of Lieutenant Commander Edward H. "Butch" O'Hare, will serve as a 'node' in the airport's network.
The new terminal build is being partnered by the City of Chicago and engineering and risk-management firm AECOM. With its focus on improving the passenger experience, Terminal D is set to be a welcome addition to O'Hare International Airport.
