Ravichandran Ashwin Switches Focus to ILT20 Tournament
Indian cricket veteran Ravichandran Ashwin has made a surprising move, opting to participate in the upcoming ILT20 tournament instead of the SA20-2026 league. This decision comes after Ashwin's retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) last week.
The ILT20, slated to begin on January 11, 2026, will see Ashwin join forces with Yusuf Pathan, Robin Uthappa, and Rayudu, who are the other Indian players confirmed for the tournament so far. Notably, over half of the ILT20 tournament will overlap with the SA20 league, a fact that seems to have influenced Ashwin's decision.
Ashwin's absence from the SA20 draft list is not due to any restrictions. Instead, he has chosen to place himself in the ILT20 auction pool. This move comes as the BCCI has withdrawn the "cooling-off" requirement, a decision made in response to player dissatisfaction.
Throughout his illustrious IPL career, Ashwin has represented five franchises: Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Rising Pune Supergiant, and Rajasthan Royals. In the 2025 IPL season, Ashwin played for CSK and picked up 7 wickets in 9 games at an economy rate of 9.12. Over 221 matches in the IPL, Ashwin has taken an impressive 187 wickets.
The SA20 league, set to begin on December 26, 2025, and run for a month, will take place simultaneously with the ILT20 tournament.
