Unveiling of the Bhairav Commando Force by the Indian Army: Ushering in a New Age of Strategic Defence Capabilities
Indian Army Introduces New Elite Commando Unit: The Bhairav Commando Force
The Indian Army is bolstering its military capabilities with the introduction of a new elite commando unit, the Bhairav Commando Force. This force, named after Lord Shiva's fierce form, symbolising a relentless resolve in protecting national security, will play a significant role in strengthening India's military dominance in the years to come.
Each Bhairav unit will consist of approximately 250 commandos, amounting to a total of 5,750 commandos when all 23 units are operational. These commandos will undergo intense training in their respective regimental centres, focusing on physical conditioning, weapons proficiency, and mission-specific strategies.
The primary aim of the Bhairav Commandos is to bridge the gap between the elite "Ghatak Commandos" and the well-known "Para Commandos". They will have broader operational responsibilities, alleviating the Para Commandos who will then focus on more critical missions. Unlike their predecessors, the Bhairav Commandos will function as an independent force, directly reporting to the Army Headquarters.
The Bhairav Commandos will be equipped with advanced weaponry, including AK-47 rifles, sniper rifles like the DRAGUNOV, and will undergo training in drone warfare. They will also be trained in unconventional warfare tactics, including sabotage, communications disruption, and landmine management.
The Bhairav Commandos will not be attached to any specific platoon and will be deployed on critical operations that require swift, specialised interventions. Each unit will be commanded by an officer of the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. The commandos are expected to be operational by the end of 2025, with five units to be deployed in various critical regions.
In addition to the Bhairav Commandos, the Indian Army is also creating the Rudra Brigades. These brigades will combine infantry, armoured vehicles, tanks, artillery, and drone warfare expertise for independent combat operations. The Rudra Brigades will be positioned along India's critical borders, including those with Pakistan and China, for quick deployment during conflicts.
The formation of the Bhairav Commandos and Rudra Brigades represents a shift towards more autonomous and flexible military formations within the Indian Army. Together, they will enhance India's preparedness for both conventional and unconventional warfare, focusing on agility, precision, and speed. The Army aims to eventually prepare a total of 23 to 25 such units.
The Bhairav Commando units are designated for operational deployment primarily in high-altitude and mountainous regions, focusing on border security and specialized counter-terrorism missions. The Bhairav Commandos and Rudra Brigades will play a significant role in strengthening India's military dominance in the years to come, as the Army continues to adapt to the evolving security landscape.
