Unveiling Pakistan's First Skatepark: The Unifying Force for All

In the bustling city of Lahore, Pakistan, a unique haven has emerged as a beacon of hope and unity. Established in 2023 by the nonprofit organisation Skate Pakistan, the city's first public skatepark in Lawrence Gardens has grown into a thriving community over two years.

The skatepark serves as a safe play space for people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels, providing an alternative to the city's challenges. Its construction was aided by professional skateboarders Kenny Reed and Nestor Judkins, the volunteer group Salad Days of Skateboarding, and the nonprofit Wonders Around the World.

Lahore, a city that is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, faces numerous environmental issues. The Ravi River and Nehr Canal, once sources of recreation, are either dried up or too polluted for use. Traditional childhood activities like swimming and street cricket have become difficult due to smog and extreme heat. The city's traffic-choked streets leave little room for games.

However, the skatepark in Lahore, being a rare refuge, offers a respite from these challenges. The skateboard, a rare equalizer in a country where identity is often tied to caste and status, levels the playing field. It provides a space where everyone, regardless of their background, can come together and share a common passion.

The skatepark community in Lahore has become a supportive network. Members enjoy a complimentary subscription to Atmos Magazine, and the organisation continues to thrive with the support of its members.

Photographer Tami Aftab captured the vibrant energy of the skatepark in a series of images, showcasing the resilience and spirit of the community that has found a home in this unique space. The skatepark in Lawrence Gardens, Lahore, is not just a place to skate, but a part of the city's fabric, a testament to the power of community and the human spirit.
