Unveiling: The fresh start for the upcoming venture

The Autobahn GmbH, a government-owned company responsible for maintaining and developing Germany's renowned Autobahn network, has initiated preparations for the A8 Albaufstieg expansion. This project, which aims to address the last four-lane bottleneck between Stuttgart and Ulm on the heavily traveled east-west connection, is now in its planning stages.

The preparatory work includes obtaining expert opinions, coordinating plans with neighboring municipalities, and starting ground investigations and nature conservation measures. Project teams have been established and can start immediately, with the construction start contingent upon construction approval by the federal government.

Once construction begins, provisional construction roads and bridges, as well as a drainage system, will be necessary. The specific date for the start of construction has not yet been named, but it is expected to be announced soon.

The expansion project will involve the construction of a number of new tunnels and bridges. European-wide tenders for the main construction measures will take place after detailed planning, which is expected to be completed in the next two years. The engineering firms and construction companies participating in the tenders for the main structure at the Albaufstieg have not been publicly disclosed yet, but the award date is expected sometime in 2025.

Thomas Möller, CEO of the Baden-Württemberg Construction Industry, has warned of potential hindrances from complex planning laws. However, from a legal standpoint, there is no obstacle to implementing the A8 Albaufstieg expansion. No appeals have been received at the Federal Administrative Court since the decision, and the Autobahn GmbH can now exercise its construction rights.

For those interested in learning more about the project, the Autobahn GmbH offers a film to visualize the planned expansion, which can be found at Project Detail | The Autobahn GmbH of the Federal Government.

The construction industry in Southwest Germany hopes for quick tenders and involvement of local construction companies in the project. Wolfgang Leja, a representative from the Autobahn GmbH, can be reached at 0711 66601-131 or w.leja@our website for further inquiries.

A decision for the six-lane expansion of the A8 between Mühlhausen and Hohenstadt was made in December 2020, marking a significant step forward in improving Germany's infrastructure and easing traffic congestion in the region.
