Unwavering Support for Muhyiddin After AGM Controversy: Bersatu Factions Stand Firm for Prime Minister
In a recent turn of events, the AGM of Bersatu was marred by clashes among delegates, with some calling for the resignation of party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin with chants of "turun, turun". However, the party's wings have unequivocally rejected these attempts to pressure Muhyiddin into stepping down mid-term.
Harris Idaham Rashid, the Youth Information chief of Bersatu, has emphasized that Muhyiddin was duly elected during the 2024 party elections and his term extends until 2027. He has also declared Bersatu Youth's full support for Muhyiddin as the party's prime ministerial candidate.
Similarly, Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, the women's wing chief of Bersatu, has not expressed any opposition to Muhyiddin's leadership. She has reaffirmed that the incident at the Ideal Convention Centre does not represent the views of the Melaka delegation. In fact, she was quoted as saying that she was not happy when such an incident occurred.
Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has also offered to act as a mediator should any leadership conflicts arise within the party, at both the central and grassroots levels. She underscored the need for the party to focus on strengthening itself to face the 16th general election with unity.
Harris Idaham Rashid has further stated that statutory declarations cannot override the outcome of an election in the context of Bersatu's leadership. He described the attempts to force Muhyiddin out as party president as inappropriate and unjustified.
The rejection comes after a commotion inside the Ideal Convention Centre in Shah Alam during the main Bersatu AGM. Despite the unrest, it appears that the majority of the party remains supportive of Muhyiddin Yassin's leadership.
Muhyiddin Yassin was supported by the Perikatan Nasional coalition in the efforts around the 2024 elections. This support, along with the statements from Bersatu's party wings, suggests that Muhyiddin's position as party president remains secure for the time being.
In conclusion, while there was a significant display of dissent during the AGM, the majority of Bersatu's party wings have made it clear that they support Muhyiddin Yassin as party president. The focus now shifts to strengthening the party ahead of the 16th general election.
