Up to 132 buses may be furnished by New Flyer to Suffolk County Transit in upcoming agreements.
In a significant move towards improving public transportation, New Flyer has been awarded a contract by Suffolk County Transit in the United States to deliver up to 132 buses over the next five years.
The order, placed in Q1 2025, includes a mix of 92 Xcelsior® hybrid-electric 35-foot buses and 40 Xcelsior CHARGE NGTM battery-electric 40-foot buses. These new buses are intended to join Suffolk County Transit's existing fleet of New Flyer buses, enhancing service reliability for passengers across the county.
The introduction of these new buses is anticipated to bring about several benefits. Passenger comfort is expected to be improved, and long-term operating efficiency is expected to be enhanced for passengers. The new buses are designed to operate efficiently over a long period, delivering operational savings through shared parts, tools, and training, as per New Flyer's common Xcelsior platform.
New Flyer's common Xcelsior platform enables agencies to operate hybrid and battery-electric buses with shared parts, tools, and training. This shared infrastructure not only delivers operational savings but also maintains consistent, high-quality performance. The new buses, therefore, will maintain the same level of quality that Suffolk County Transit's existing New Flyer buses provide.
The Xcelsior® hybrid-electric buses supplied to Suffolk County Transit are 35-foot long, while the Xcelsior CHARGE NGTM battery-electric buses are 40-foot long. This variety in the order underscores the value of New Flyer's platform's flexibility and dependability.
The new buses are expected to provide improved services to passengers countywide and contribute to the county's sustainability efforts by reducing emissions. With these new additions, Suffolk County Transit's existing fleet of 73 New Flyer Xcelsior® hybrid-electric 35-foot buses will grow, ensuring a greener and more efficient public transportation system.
This contract award underscores New Flyer's commitment to delivering high-quality, efficient, and sustainable transportation solutions to its clients. The company looks forward to continuing its partnership with Suffolk County Transit in the years to come.
