Upcoming Blood Donation: Set for August 21 as Decided by the Technical Council
The German Red Cross (DRK) is organizing a series of blood donation events in our city, with the next one taking place at the Technical City Hall on August 21, from 11 am to 3 pm. The city administration continues to support such campaigns, providing free municipal premises for this noble cause.
Blood donations collected at these events will be processed and divided into three components: red blood cells (erythrocytes), platelets (thrombocytes), and blood plasma. Each component has a different function and is needed by different patients. For instance, red blood cells carry oxygen to our body's tissues, platelets are crucial for blood clotting, and blood plasma helps maintain the balance of fluids and proteins in the body.
To ensure smooth operations and to avoid long waiting times, registration is necessary. You can register for this event, as well as for other upcoming donation dates, online at www.blutspendedienst-west.de. Additional dates include November 24 and December 15 at Haus Horrem.
It's important to note that blood donations can be made by anyone who is at least 18 years old and healthy. However, white blood cells (leukocytes) will be removed from all blood preparations to prevent potential infections.
Each blood donation has the potential to save three lives. Daily, 15,000 blood units are needed for transfusions in Germany, with another 12,000 held in reserve for major incidents. So, your donation can truly make a difference.
On December 18, 2022, from 4 PM, the blood donation station will be set up at the Catholic parish center St. Katharina. If you're unable to attend the August event, consider marking your calendar for this date.
Remember, every donation counts. Let's come together and ensure a steady supply of blood for those in need. Your donation could be the gift of life for someone in our community.
