Upcoming film: Knight Rider, produced by the team behind Cobra Kai hits production phase
In a thrilling turn of events, the creators of the hit TV series Cobra Kai are considering a new venture: a film adaptation of the iconic 1980s TV show, Knight Rider.
Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, the masterminds behind Cobra Kai, have made a name for themselves in both television and film, particularly in adapting 1980s properties. Their successful blend of comedy, nostalgia, and heartfelt drama in Cobra Kai has paved the way for them to take on another beloved property from the same era.
If all goes to plan, the Knight Rider movie will be distributed by Universal Pictures. The original series, which first aired in 1982, starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight and featured a black Pontiac Firebird named KITT. KITT was fitted with an artificially-intelligent computer and was voiced by William Daniels.
The potential Knight Rider movie will see Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald not only writing the screenplay but also directing the film. David Zucker is allegedly involved in the direction of the theatrical version of Knight Rider.
The creators' decision to adapt Knight Rider comes as no surprise, given their success with Cobra Kai. The spin-off from the 1984 martial arts drama The Karate Kid initially premiered on YouTube Red in 2018 and eventually moved to Netflix between 2021 and 2025, where it ran for six seasons.
Knight Rider, too, has a rich history. While there have been previous attempts to update the property, including the 1991 TV movie Knight Rider 2000 and the late 1990s series Team Knight Rider, the original 1982 run is more fondly remembered than any subsequent updates.
The potential Knight Rider movie has not yet been officially confirmed, and there may be a long wait for the new adaptation, given the length of time it took to update Highlander. Nevertheless, the prospect of a Knight Rider movie written and directed by the creators of Cobra Kai is an exciting one for fans of the original series.
