Upcoming Local Elections in North Rhine-Westphalia: What Drives Voters in the Region

In the lead-up to the upcoming local elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, a recent survey has revealed a mix of satisfaction and criticism from the region's residents. The poll, conducted from August 12 to 28, 2025, involved 5,550 eligible voters.

The survey found that the guarantee of public security and order is the only area where a clear positive judgment prevails, with 60% satisfied and 39% unsatisfied. However, views on other key issues are more balanced, with a majority unsatisfied in each case.

The state of roads, bridges, and bike paths is viewed even more critically, with only 30% satisfied and 69% unsatisfied. The condition of these infrastructure elements is more satisfactory in small communities (39%) compared to large cities (22%). On the other hand, the condition of schools and kindergartens is more satisfactory in small communities (55%) compared to large cities (31%).

Public transportation in small communities is less satisfactory, with only 27% expressing satisfaction, compared to 53% in large cities.

Eligible voters predominantly view the integration of foreigners and the housing and rental market critically, with only 38% and 28% satisfied respectively.

The CDU is the most trusted party in North Rhine-Westphalia to solve local problems, with 23% of voters trusting them. The SPD is second, with 15% trust, followed by the AfD with 11%. Interestingly, the FDP performs better in trust among younger voters than in the overall population.

The upcoming local elections are drawing the attention of 67% of its residents, with 22% very interested and 45% quite interested. One-third (32%) of North Rhine-Westphalia residents view the local elections as less important, with 27% showing little interest and 5% showing no interest.

Older voters (over 64 years old) trust the CDU more than younger voters, with 31% compared to 16%. Intriguingly, in the younger generation (under 35), the SPD is only slightly ahead of the AfD in terms of trust.

The search results do not provide specific polling or survey data about which political party Germans trust the most to solve the most important local problems.

Despite the mixed responses, 77% of eligible voters in North Rhine-Westphalia's cities and communities are either very satisfied or satisfied with their living conditions. This finding suggests that while there are areas for improvement, the majority of residents are generally content with their local living conditions.
