SA20 Fourth Season Player Auction Set for September 9, 2025
Preparations for the South African T20 League's fourth season are in full swing, with the player auction scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on September 9, 2025. The event will see 84 slots filled across six franchises, each with a salary cap of US$2.31 million.
The auction pool includes a diverse range of international and domestic talent. Notable names include South Africa's T20I captain Aiden Markram, England's James Anderson, Alex Hales, and Moeen Ali, New Zealand's Devon Conway, and Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib-al-Hasan.
Each franchise must build a squad of 19 players, with at least two South African Under-23 players and a minimum of nine South Africans compulsory. The teams are also allowed an additional wildcard slot. Among the pre-signings are Sherfane Rutherford and Andre Russell for Pretoria Capitals, Jonny Bairstow, Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar, Adam Milne, and Marco Jansen for Sunrisers Eastern Cape, and Robin Peterson as the head coach for MI Cape Town.
For the first time, franchises will have access to Right to Match cards, adding an exciting element to the auction. The combined purse for the auction is US$7.37 million, with the purse for Joburg Super Kings standing at US$1.2 million.
The auction will take place ahead of the tournament's start on December 26, 2025. Fans can follow the live action online through a live blog or on the SA20 YouTube channel. In India, the event will be live-streamed on JioHotstar and available on Star Sports 1 (SD+HD).
The six franchises participating in the auction are yet to be specified. Among the coaches confirmed are Stephen Fleming for Joburg Super Kings, Sourav Ganguly for Pretoria Capitals, Lance Klusener for the SA20 fourth season, and Trevor Penney for both Paarl Royals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
The final pool of players has been narrowed down to 541, comprising 300 South Africans and 241 overseas cricketers. Some of the retained players include Faf du Plessis (captain) for Joburg Super Kings, Corbin Bosch, Trent Boult, Rashid Khan, George Linde, Ryan Rickelton, and Kagiso Rabada for MI Cape Town, and Bjorn Fortuin, David Miller, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Rubin Hermann for Paarl Royals.
