Upcoming Wheat Harvest in 2025: Understanding the Most Robust Wheat Varieties for Farmers
In the agricultural landscape of Germany, 2025 saw some significant shifts in the cultivation and multiplication of key grains, particularly wheat, barley, and maize. However, specific data on the increase in crop varieties and the extent of such increases are not readily available. The general trend, however, indicates a decrease in total production for these key grains, a reflection of varied yield and cultivation changes rather than clear increases by variety.
One positive note is the increase in wheat multiplications in certain regions. In Lower Saxony, there was a notable 30% increase, while North Rhine-Westphalia saw a 17% increase in 2025. These multiplication areas provide insight into which varieties breeders expect good market opportunities.
The top ten strongest winter barley varieties chosen by farmers in 2025 remain undisclosed, but the focus seems to have shifted towards E-sorts and E-wheat varieties. E-sorts have increased their share by five percentage points to 23 percent, with Ponticus, another E-wheat, in third place with 2,523 ha, an increase of 499 ha. KWS Emerick, another E-wheat, is at 1,669 ha, an increase of 309 ha, ranking seventh.
Spectral, a bread wheat, has almost tripled its seed production this year and is at 1,945 ha, ranking sixth. The most significant wheat variety in 2025 is Chevignon, with a decrease of 784 ha but still occupying 3,633 ha. Exsal, another E-wheat, is the second most increased variety, gaining about 1,400 ha and occupying 2,544 ha.
LG Optimist, the first A-wheat among the top ten, ranks fifth with an increase of almost 800 ha and occupying 2,023 ha. KWS Keitum, a C-wheat, is very stable and in fourth place with 2,044 ha.
It's important to note that the seven mentioned varieties account for nearly 36 percent of the increase area. Seed production for winter cereals increased by 91,883 ha, a 6% increase from the previous year, with currently 45,917 ha of winter wheat in the field for seed production nationwide.

While these trends offer valuable insights into the German agricultural landscape, it's essential to address the presence of ergot, a fungus that can infect wheat, which is related to LSD. More information about ergotism can be found in a separate article.
