Updates on The Legend of Zelda Movie: An Overview of Current Information

The world of Hyrule is about to come to life on the big screen, as production for the highly-anticipated film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is underway.

Nintendo, in partnership with Sony Pictures, will co-develop and co-finance the project, with Sony Pictures serving as the global distributor. The film is set to be released on May 7, 2027.

The production team for the film includes Derek Connolly and T.S. Nowlin, who will write the screenplay, and Wes Ball, known for the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, who will direct. Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, renowned figures in the gaming and film industries respectively, will also produce the film.

The film's synopsis suggests a perilous journey for Link, a young warrior, as he seeks to protect Hyrule from Ganon and find the Triforce. The roles of Link and Zelda will be played by two up-and-coming actors, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason, respectively.

As for the villain Ganondorf, his actor has yet to be announced. The remaining cast for the film is also yet to be revealed.

The film's style is intended to resemble a live-action Hayao Miyazaki movie, with influences from several of his films. It is unclear whether the film will adapt the story of one or multiple Zelda games, but it may draw from core elements from the first Legend of Zelda game, Ocarina of Time, and/or Breath of the Wild.

Principal photography for the film is expected to begin on November 4, 2025, and end on April 7, 2026, with filming taking place in Wellington, New Zealand. An intriguing rumour circulating in the movie industry is that Nintendo and Sony Pictures intend to make a Zelda movie trilogy.

An interesting casting consideration is the possibility of casting an actor of Middle Eastern or North African descent for the role of the Gerudo king.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new project!
