In a recent warning, Amazon has alerted its customers about a rising trend of text scams that aim to steal account passwords. The scam involves malicious sign-in pages, often disguised as links sent via text messages, even from what appears to be a legitimate organisation.

To combat this threat, Amazon recommends adding a passkey to upgrade account security. Passkeys offer a more convenient passwordless sign-in, utilising biometrics or PINs from your phone to prevent unauthorised access. This measure ensures that even if an attacker gains access to your account link, they will not be able to log in without your device.

Amazon is also committed to expanding the availability of passkeys across more apps and services. In the last 12 months, the number of Amazon passkey users has almost doubled, with over 320 million customers currently using passkeys for passwordless sign-in on Amazon.com.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has also issued a warning about this scam, emphasising the importance of staying vigilant. It is crucial to remember never to click links in any text messages, especially those that open sign-in pages.

Under your Amazon account settings, there is a section to check and add a passkey for account security. This feature links access to the security of your own device, providing an extra layer of protection. Amazon encourages customers to use two-step verification and Passkeys to protect their accounts.

To further strengthen your account security, Amazon advises against logging into any accounts through links sent to you, even if they seem legitimate. Instead, navigate to the website directly through a trusted source. Furthermore, passcodes should never be shared with anyone, even from an app.

As the landscape of scams evolves, it is essential to stay one step ahead. The lure of scams can change, and the next one might catch you out, so it's crucial to upgrade account security now. Amazon is dedicated to helping its customers stay safe online and encourages everyone to take advantage of the passkey feature for a more secure shopping experience.
