Francia Elena Márquez Mina: A Controversial Vice President in Colombia
Francia Elena Márquez Mina, the Vice President of Colombia, has been a polarizing figure since her inauguration in 2022. Known for her authentic, emotional, and combative style, Márquez Mina has faced numerous challenges, including media smear campaigns, paramilitary death threats, and internal disputes within the government.
Márquez Mina, a key factor in the election victory, particularly in regions with high proportions of black, indigenous, and small farmer populations, has been a vocal advocate for marginalized communities. She has resonated with the discriminated, earning her a large following. However, her tenure has not been without controversy.
In 2022, Márquez Mina threatened to resign, but remained silent, a move that earned her harsh criticism. This was followed by a heated Council of Ministers meeting over a dispute regarding the appointment of actress Amaranta Hank.
Márquez Mina's promise of a better life, or "vivir sabroso," has been a central theme of her political career. However, three years into the government, this promise has barely been noticeable. The Ministry of Equality and Justice launched by Márquez Mina is not progressing as desired, particularly in the poorest, conflict- and state-neglected regions of the Pacific.
Despite these challenges, Márquez Mina has not shied away from speaking out. She has criticized the marginalization of the Afro-movement in governance and has quoted Angela Davis, calling for being anti-racist.
In August 2021, Márquez Mina founded a new party, Soy Porque Somos, inspired by the African philosophy Ubuntu. The party has received support from thousands of supporters at the Pacific music festival Petronio Álvarez in Cali.
Márquez Mina's relationship with President Gustavo Petro has been strained, with disagreements over governance. The opposition has skillfully exploited these disagreements, leading to accusations of racism against President Petro due to the appointment of certain officials.
Despite the challenges, Márquez Mina has placed symbolic reparations and international compensation from European colonial powers on the international agenda. She has traveled to Africa multiple times to deepen cooperation in the Global South and has been seen as a beacon of hope for marginalized communities in Colombia.
Recently, Márquez Mina has ruled out a second term, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape of Colombia. As her tenure comes to a close, the impact of Márquez Mina's activism and leadership will continue to be felt, shaping the future of Colombia's marginalized communities.
