Urban Development Laboratory: Luckenwalde Prepares for Schinkel Competition 2026

Luckenwalde, a city located about 50 kilometers south of Berlin, is set to undergo a significant transformation as it becomes the focus of the renowned Schinkel Competition 2026. This prestigious competition for young talent in Germany, organised by the Architekten- und Ingenieur-Verein Berlin-Brandenburg (AIV), aims to develop comprehensive concepts that reflect the multifaceted change of the city.

The competition tasks range from architecture to urban planning, landscape planning, mobility concepts, and artistic contributions on the theme of urban change. The competition invites young talents from various fields to develop visionary concepts for a model district in Luckenwalde, with the aim of integrating vacant properties, wasteland, and urban structural breaks into a future-proof overall development.

The competition focuses on the "Karree" area, an inner-city area between the train station, the former castle, and the city center. The AIV, an institution with over 200 years of history, emphasizes that collaboration of different disciplines can lead to innovative and transferable solutions.

The Schinkel Competition continues the tradition of its namesake Karl Friedrich Schinkel, bringing "mid-sized cities" like Luckenwalde into the spotlight of urban development discussions through innovative ideas. The total prize money for the Schinkel Competition 2026 is 30,000 euros.

The competition was initially tested in Luckenwalde through the EU funding program URBAN II in the early 2000s. Luckenwalde, with its rich industrial history, has experienced significant breaks with deindustrialization and structural change. Today, the city faces the task of revitalizing its urban landscape and creating a sustainable future.

The Q&A colloquium for the Schinkel Competition 2026 will take place on November 7, 2025, providing an opportunity for interested participants to ask questions and gain insights into the competition. The submission of works for the competition is on February 9, 2026, and the award ceremony is planned for March 13, 2026, in Berlin.

The Architekten- und Ingenieurverein zu Berlin-Brandenburg e.V. (AIV Berlin-Brandenburg), an institution responsible for the competition for over 160 years, is organising the Schinkel-Wettbewerb 2026 in Luckenwalde. The competition seeks Leitbilder for a model district that addresses structural deficits and provides new impulses for living, working, culture, and mobility in Luckenwalde.

As the competition approaches, the city of Luckenwalde and the AIV Berlin-Brandenburg look forward to receiving innovative and transformative ideas that will shape the future of this historic city.
