US Open Victory for Coco Gauff follows an ordinary course after an extraordinary and emotional initial phase in her tournament

In the grand stage of Arthur Ashe Stadium, Coco Gauff, the world No. 3 and two-time Grand Slam champion, made her mark at the 2025 U.S. Open. The tournament, being the seventh in the series, saw Gauff as the biggest star in the women's game, especially in this event.

Gauff's journey began with a first-round match against Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia. The encounter was emotional for Gauff, as she sobbed during a changeover and a post-match interview. Despite the emotional turmoil, Gauff averaged about 100 mph on her first serve, a feat she hadn't achieved this week. However, her forehand became loose and started going long for a brief period.

Tomljanovic, known for her tenacity, made things difficult for Gauff. But Gauff's opponent's strengths didn't play into her disadvantage, and she advanced to the next round.

In the second round, Gauff faced Donna Vekic. The match was error-strewn for Gauff, reflecting the turmoil inside her head and heart. Yet, she managed to secure a win, setting the stage for her much-anticipated third-round match against Magdalena Frech of Poland, the No. 28 seed.

The match against Frech might be Gauff's biggest triumph so far in her grand experiment of competing in a Grand Slam while restructuring her serve. Gauff's coach, Gavin MacMillan, replaced Matt Daly shortly before the tournament, while she continues to work with her longtime coach Jean-Christophe Faurel.

The restructuring seemed to pay off, as Gauff played a dominant match against Frech, winning with a score of 6-3, 6-1. Her serve, which had been a source of struggle, seemed more stable, and her groundstrokes were precise.

With this victory, Gauff advanced to the third round of the 2025 U.S. Open. Her performance in the tournament is described as "pretty normal," given the events of her past week. Yet, for Gauff, every match is a step forward in her quest to master her new serve and continue her Grand Slam journey.
