In a recent development, Cologne police have issued a warning to buyers of used cars online, following a series of incidents involving fraudulent vehicle sales in Cologne and Düsseldorf.
On August 25th, a suspected fence (44) was temporarily arrested in Cologne-Dellbrück. During the search of his belongings, forged vehicle documents were found. A suspected accomplice (21) was later arrested in Düsseldorf.
The incidents involved a VW Tayron and a VW Golf with mismatched license plates. The Cologne license plates attached to the offered SUV were registered to a VW Golf, raising red flags for authorities.
The 44-year-old had initially provided false information, and there was an arrest warrant against him for endangering road traffic and a wanted notice for fencing. The 21-year-old now faces charges, including attempting to deceive the authorities, as he contacted the Düsseldorf police to report the theft of the rental car he and the 44-year-old had offered for sale on an internet platform.
The warrant for endangering road traffic against the 44-year-old suspected of unemployment benefits fraud was issued by the public prosecutor's office.
