In a recent advisory, the Consumer Center of Schleswig-Holstein (VZSH) urges PayPal users to stay vigilant and informed about the latest security measures and updates from the online payment giant. The alert comes amidst reports suggesting an alleged data leak at PayPal.

However, it's important to note that there is currently no independent confirmation of the authenticity of these data leak reports. The sources of the PayPal data leaks are primarily from phishing attacks and malware, which collect user login credentials by deceiving users into entering details on fake websites or through malicious software.

The leaked data appearing on hacker forums likely stems from these external aggregations rather than a direct, new PayPal breach. PayPal has denied any new security incident and affirms that the data is from a known 2022 breach.

Reports indicate that plaintext passwords of millions of PayPal users are being offered on the dark web. In light of this, consumers can minimise risks in the current situation and in the event of future data leaks by taking immediate action.

The VZSH provides guidance on how to protect PayPal accounts. Consumers are advised to be cautious of targeted phishing campaigns or fake emails. They should not be misled by supposed warnings or protection offers that lead them to dubious websites or prompt them to enter login credentials.

PayPal, too, has stated that there has been no new security incident so far. The company encourages users to regularly check their account activity and update their passwords regularly. By staying informed and taking proactive measures, consumers can safeguard their PayPal accounts and maintain their online security.
