Utilizing Fantasy Premier League: Optimal Timing for Employing Chips
In the dynamic world of Fantasy Premier League (FPL), managing your team strategically is key to success. One of the ways to gain an edge over other managers is by utilising the various chips available to you throughout the season. Here's a breakdown of each chip and when it's best to use them.
Wildcard
When you find yourself in a situation where a number of players are injured, suspended, not starting, or consistently not scoring many points, the Wildcard chip comes in handy. This chip allows you to make unlimited transfers free of charge, enabling a complete squad overhaul. The recommended time to use the Wildcard is usually around Gameweek 6 when players in form emerge and fixture swings align, allowing for strategic adjustments. Some experienced managers also consider saving it for fixture swings around Gameweeks 13 to 15.
Bench Boost
The Bench Boost chip is particularly useful when you want to maximise your points from your bench as well as your starting XI. This chip doubles the points earned by every player on your bench for that Gameweek. The best strategy for using Bench Boost is during double Gameweeks, especially those against favourable opponents in the second half of the season. Another good time to use it is on the opening weekend of the season or when a squad has favourable fixtures across the board.
Free Hit
The Free Hit chip gives you the opportunity to make unlimited transfers for a single Gameweek, and your squad reverts to its original state after that. This chip is often used to cover any blank Gameweeks or to cash in on players with a double gameweek. Another good time to use Free Hit is when a number of high-performing players have easier fixtures for that Gameweek. In Gameweek 16, five free transfers become available to all, which can be used as an unofficial Wildcard if planned accordingly.
Triple Captain
The Triple Captain chip allows you to get triple instead of double points for the chosen captain for that gameweek. This chip can be used strategically to boost your captain's points significantly, especially when you predict a high-scoring game for that particular player.
The 2025/26 Season Chips
In the 2025/26 season of FPL, players can use eight chips over the course of the campaign. These chips include 2x Bench Boost, 2x Free Hit, 2x Triple Captain, and 2x Wildcard.
