Vacation Spots Passau: Record-Breaking June Tourism

Passau's Tourism Trends for the First Half of 2025

The city of Passau, nestled along the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers, has released preliminary tourism figures for the first half of 2025. The data offers a mixed picture, with some positive signs and areas for improvement.

According to the Bavarian State Office of Statistics, river cruise ships continue to be a significant contributor to Passau's tourism, with the majority of arrivals occurring between May and October, and also in December. This accounts for approximately 75% of the total arrivals. However, the number of river cruise ship arrivals is still slightly below the pre-Corona level, with 2,719 arrivals in 2019 compared to the current figure.

The city's tourism industry has seen a shift in the behaviour of guests. Domestic tourists have shown a higher increase in overnight stays (+10.0 percent), while there has been a decrease in overnight stays for international guests (-9.4 percent). Despite this, the average length of stay in Passau remains unchanged at 1.8 days, and the city boasts an above-average bed occupancy rate of 46.0 percent across Bavaria.

The decrease in overnight stays for the first half of 2025 is 1.9 percent compared to previous years, with 247,357 overnight stays and 135,293 arrivals. This slight dip in numbers has not deterred the city's ambitions, as Passau continues to focus on promoting tourism that fits the city and can be handled with the existing infrastructure.

The city's strategy involves strengthening the tourism offer and providing impulses, working in cooperation with its partners. Passau offers classic city tourism with an attractive cultural and leisure offer, with quality being just as important as quantity. The city aims to ensure that tourism and city life coexist well.

June 2025 showed a more positive picture for the mid-year balance, with an increase in overnight stays of 6.7 percent. This upturn in the trend, after a downward trajectory for the first half of the year, indicates a positive outlook for the city's tourism industry.

Passau's tourism industry plays a crucial role in the regional economy, creating jobs and supporting honorable and tax-paying businesses. The city is committed to continuing its efforts to promote tourism and ensure its continued growth and success.

Despite the lack of specific data regarding the expected or achieved number of overnight guests in June 2025, the city sees the mid-year point in the tourism trend positively. Passau looks forward to welcoming more visitors in the coming months and continuing to offer a unique and memorable experience to all who visit.
