Valencian students to explore ETA terrorism in their coursework starting from next academic year
In a significant move towards comprehensive historical education, the Valencian Community is set to reinstate the syllabus for the History subject in the second year of Baccalaureate, which includes contents on terrorism, the ETA group, and the memory of victims and their families. This decision, announced by the Minister of Education, Antonio Rovira, will take effect in the academic year 2026-2027.
The reinstatement of this syllabus follows the discovery that the previous Government of Ximo Puig had changed the curriculum of the History subject. This modification took place in 2022 as part of the educational reform known as the Celaá Law. Notably, any reference to terrorism was omitted in this reform.
In contrast, several autonomous communities, including Madrid, Castile and León, Murcia, and Aragon, require studying ETA's terrorism. However, the Valencian Community, along with the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, and the Basque Country, did not address terrorism in their syllabus.
The rest of the autonomous communities include terrorism in their syllabus, but without focusing on ETA's. Antonio Rovira emphasized the need to teach the history that occurred in Spain after Franco's dictatorship, including the events of the last 40 years. He mentioned that more than 850 people were killed by the terrorist group ETA in Spain.
The Minister of Education also highlighted the importance of providing a complete picture of Spain's history to the new generations. He stated that the syllabus is being reinstated so that the young people in the Valencian Community can know all of Spain's history up to the present day, not just a part of it.
In addition to the reinstatement of the History syllabus, the Government of Carlos Mázon will also approve a new decree on Coexistence before the end of the year. This decree will address disciplinary issues of students and reinforce the teacher's figure. A subscription is available for access to this new decree on Coexistence.
The Generalitat is also considering modifying the regulations that govern the syllabus taught in the different subjects during the 2025-2026 course. These modifications aim to ensure that the educational system provides a well-rounded and comprehensive education to the students of the Valencian Community.
Antonio Rovira made this announcement during his attendance at the start of the school year at the CEIP Maestro Canó́s Sanmartín school in Castelló. The Minister's presence and announcement serve as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to improving the educational system in the Valencian Community.
