Value of Classic Cars from East Germany Today

In the world of classic cars, a surprising trend has emerged: East German vehicles are now highly sought after. Last year, around 8,900 Wartburg cars, mostly produced by VEB Automobilwerke Eisenach, were still registered, while a staggering 40,800 Trabis (VEB Sachsenring vehicles) could be found on Germany's roads.

The Trabant, in particular, has captured the interest of collectors. More than half of its owners are under 60 years old, with around 2,800 Trabi owners being under 30. The Trabant 601 in impeccable original condition can be sold for up to 7,000 euros, while a Wartburg 353 limousine in top condition might fetch almost 10,000 euros.

The EMW 327, which is practically identical to the BMW model produced in Eisenach until 1941, also holds a significant value. Rare EMW 327 models, especially the limited-production cabriolets and coupes, can fetch over 100,000 euros on the classic car market today if in excellent original condition with complete documentation. The extremely rare Wartburg 311 coupé can fetch almost 35,000 euros.

These East German classics, such as the Trabant and Wartburg, are now in high demand as oldtimers. Seasoned experts find it surprising that these vehicles have gained such value. Lovingly restored Trabants, Wartburgs, Simson mopeds, and IFA trucks attract many spectators at specialised oldtimer meetings, including the Zwickau Trabant and East Vehicle Meeting, the International Ostblock Vehicle Meeting in Pütlitz, the Trabant Meeting in Anklam, and the Ostmobile Meeting in Thale.

Collectors value the original condition and well-documented history of these vehicles. Some "GDR" license plates can still be seen on the classic cars at these meetings, adding a touch of nostalgia to the events. As these East German classics continue to gain popularity, it seems that their value will only continue to rise.
