Verstappen clinches commanding win in Italian Formula 1 race
In a thrilling race at Monza, Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen claimed victory at the Italian Grand Prix. The Dutch driver, who last won at Imola in May, secured his third triumph of the season.
Lando Norris started the race in pole position, but Verstappen quickly took the lead on the second lap. However, Norris put up a valiant fight, holding onto the position until the fourth lap. Despite his efforts, he could not keep up with the world champion, eventually finishing in second place.
Oscar Piastri, driving for McLaren, reclaimed third place from Norris on lap six, having been instructed to do so due to Norris stopping first. This decision was taken to cover off Charles Leclerc, who was close behind. Piastri held onto third place for the rest of the race, while Leclerc finished in fourth place for Ferrari.
George Russell took fifth place for Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton moving from 10th to sixth place by lap seven. Hamilton's impressive climb was particularly notable as it was his debut in Monza for the Scuderia.
The race was a one-stopper for McLaren, with both Norris and Piastri opting to stay out longer to gain a free stop under the safety car. However, Norris's pit stop was slowed due to a problem securing the front-left wheel, allowing Verstappen to pull away. By lap 13, Verstappen had put almost four seconds on Norris.
Laurent Mekies, the new principal of Red Bull Racing, won his first GP victory with the team. Mekies was promoted from Racing Bulls team principal to Red Bull Racing CEO and team principal after Christian Horner was dismissed following the British Grand Prix in 2025.
The race was marked by McLaren imposing team orders on their drivers, a decision that sparked some controversy among fans. Despite this, the race was incident-free, with no safety car interventions throughout.
In the end, Verstappen's skill and determination shone through, securing him the victory at the Italian Grand Prix. The win marks a significant milestone in his career and puts him in a strong position for the rest of the season.
