Victory Secured by HSV in a Dull 0:0 Match
The first Bundesliga match of the season between Hamburger SV and Borussia Mönchengladbach was attended by 54,042 spectators at the Borussia-Park. However, the match failed to live up to expectations, with both teams struggling to create significant goal threats.
Without the ball, Borussia Mönchengladbach formed a compact five-man defensive block, while Hamburger SV, under a new team with a different approach, gained in tempo. One of the few highlights of the match came in the 27th minute, when Kevin Stöger made a pass to Franck Honorat.
Hamburger SV achieved a 0:0 draw in its first match against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Daniel Heuer Fernandes was chosen as the goalkeeper for Hamburger SV, not Daniel Peretz. Tim Kleindienst and Nathan Ngoumou are still out for a longer period.
Yussuf Poulsen, the new captain and most prominent new signing, was initially on the bench. Six players from last season's squad started for Hamburger SV in the opening match. The newcomers included Heuer Fernandes, Elfadli, and Muheim, who had started in the last second division game. Other newcomers such as Capaldo, Elfadli, Gocholeishvili, Königsdörffer, Muheim, Omari, Røssing-Lelesit, and Sahiti made their Bundesliga debuts.
Borussia Mönchengladbach, who finished the previous season in 10th place, were the dominant team but had hardly any goal threat. Stefan Kuntz, the sports director, predicted that it will take some time for everything to click for the team. Mönchengladbach struggled to find its rhythm during the match, often losing itself in long possession phases that ended at the Hamburg penalty area.
Florian Neuhaus' substitution provided a thrust in the Gladbach game, but it was not enough for a win. The biggest chance of the game came when Honorat had a shot against Heuer Fernandes, but he failed to score.
Former captain Julian Weigl is released for talks with other clubs. Hamburger SV has returned to the Bundesliga after a seven-year absence. Mönchengladbach's coach, Haris Tabakovic, was the only new signing from Hamburger SV in the starting lineup. ASV Hamm-Westfalen started the new season with a derby win, separate from the Bundesliga match between Hamburger SV and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
