Vienna's Otto-Wagner-Areal Reopens Jugendstiltheater with Kafka Masterpiece

Vienna's Otto-Wagner-Areal is transforming into a hub for art, education, and innovation. The historic Jugendstiltheater, revitalized and modernized, reopened with a monumental Kafka reading by actor Philipp Hochmair.

The Otto-Wagner-Areal, once a sprawling hospital complex, is now being redeveloped into a vibrant cultural and educational space. Alongside the new campus of the Music and Art Private University of the City of Vienna (MUK), other projects include WEST, Kollektiv Kaorle, Atelierhaus Wien, and planned geothermal drilling for sustainable energy.

On October 11, 2025, actor Philipp Hochmair reopened the historic Jugendstiltheater with a powerful reading of 'The Trial' by Franz Kafka. The event, titled 'Hochmair, wo bist Du?', was a balance of historical appreciation and contemporary interpretation. Hochmair's performance highlighted themes of power, powerlessness, and bureaucratic arbitrariness, resonating with modern audiences. After the reading, author Katharina von der Leyen's book of the same name was signed by Hochmair.

The Otto-Wagner-Areal's transformation continues with the relocation of MUK's campus and the successful revitalization of the Jugendstiltheater. Philipp Hochmair's Kafka reading marked a significant cultural event in Vienna, showcasing the area's potential as a thriving arts and education district.
