Vietnam, with a lack of goals, narrowly overcame a youthful Singapore squad
The Vietnamese U23 team celebrated a hard-fought 1-0 victory over U23 Singapore in their second match of Group C in the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers. The match, held at Việt Trì Stadium in Phú Thọ Province, saw the Vietnamese team dominate possession but struggle to convert their multiple scoring opportunities.
Lê Văn Thuận scored the only goal of the match, securing an important win for the team. However, coach Kim Sang-sik was not entirely satisfied with the performance, acknowledging the team's difficulties in finding the back of the net.
Nguyễn Văn Trưòng, the man of the match, reflected on the five missed chances, admitting that being unlucky is normal in football. Despite the setbacks, Trưòng reiterated the team's goal to strive for victory in the final match.
The team's next challenge is a decisive clash with U23 Yemen. Kim Sang-sik expressed confidence in the team's ability to win against Yemen, stating that the team's fast players can exploit the space behind Yemen's strong defense. However, the coach also emphasised the need for the team to improve their finishing skills.
The final group match between Vietnam and Yemen will take place on Tuesday. The sole qualifying spot for the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 finals is on the line, making the match a crucial one for both teams.
Nguyễn Văn Trưòng hopes more people will come to cheer the team on in the final match. The Vietnamese U23 team faces Jordan in their last group match of the qualifiers, but for now, the focus is on securing a win against Yemen.
The U23 Singapore team, the youngest in Group C, put up a valiant effort but ultimately came up short against the more experienced Vietnamese team. The Singaporean team will look to regroup and prepare for their remaining matches in the qualifiers.
Final shots flew wide, were denied by the crossbar or post during the match, highlighting the team's determination and the close nature of the contest. As the qualifiers progress, the stakes continue to rise, and the Vietnamese U23 team will be looking to build on their win against Singapore and secure their place in the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 finals.
