Thomas Partey, the former Arsenal midfielder, has completed a medical and agreed to a one-year contract with Spanish club Villarreal. This transfer marks his return to Spain, where he previously played for Atletico Madrid for eight years before joining Arsenal in 2020.
The move comes amidst the ongoing legal proceedings against Partey in London. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday at Westminster Magistrates' Court on rape and sexual assault charges. These charges, which he denies, include multiple counts.
Partey's lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, has stated that he has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. In a statement, Wiltshire said he now welcomes the opportunity to clear his name.
Mikel Arteta, Arsenal manager, expressed 100% confidence that the club followed the right process around Partey. He also confirmed that he cannot comment on any of the legal matters due to their complexity. In a previous statement, the club was very clear in its stance regarding the legal matters.
Villarreal finished fifth in LaLiga last season, and the club is scheduled to play a friendly match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. If the extension is exercised, Partey will be eligible to play in the Champions League next season. His contract with Villarreal includes an option to extend for another year.
It is important to note that Thomas Partey was not publicly known to have been charged by any police authority in July 2022. He was first arrested during his time at Arsenal in July 2022, and his contract with Arsenal expired at the end of June. The Met Police charged him last month.
