Vineyards boosting fiber production on land
Baden-Württemberg is making significant strides in its broadband expansion, with a focus on achieving a comprehensive fiber optic supply throughout the region by 2028. This ambitious goal is being pursued through a combination of ongoing funding and expansion projects, as well as private-sector initiatives.
In the town of Waghaeusel, for instance, Deutsche Glasfaser is supplementing the funded expansion with a large-scale, private-sector expansion. This project, totalling over 4.3 million euros, will create 1,344 fiber optic connections, including a school, 173 commercial enterprises, and 30 public buildings.
The town of Weingarten is also set to benefit from this expansion, with 181 new fiber optic connections planned, including a school, 32 commercial enterprises, and six public buildings. The municipality will receive funding of 556,672 euros for this project.
These expansion projects in Waghaeusel and Weingarten are examples of how close cooperation between state-funded expansion and expansion by private companies can lead to tangible successes.
Minister Thomas Strobl, the Minister of Interior and Digitalization, has awarded funding decisions for the expansion of fiber optic networks in the district of Karlsruhe, totalling over twelve million euros. Minister Strobl emphasizes cooperation instead of overlap for broadband expansion.
Baden-Württemberg has been a pioneer in broadband expansion since 2014, consistently relying on a combination of state and federal funding, as well as expansion by private network operators. The Glasfaserpakt Baden-Württemberg involves binding rules and clear priorities to ensure the successful implementation of these expansion projects.
The aim is to bring Baden-Württemberg to the gigabit level, facilitating education without loading bars, medical consultations via video, global markets from home offices, and increased security through modern communication technologies. By 2028 at the latest, over 120,000 fiber optic connections are expected to be available throughout the district.
