Vingegaard responds to Soler's victory in Vuelta stage 14, as he secures his own triumph
In a thrilling turn of events at the Vuelta a España 2025, UAE Team Emirates' Marc Soler claimed victory in the Farrapona summit finish stage, marking the fourth win for the team in this year's race.
Soler, an unnamed Spaniard in earlier reports, put more than a minute between himself and his closest pursuer, Johannes Staune-Mittet, to become the fourth UAE rider to win a stage at this year's Vuelta.
Meanwhile, Tom Pidcock lost 10 seconds but managed to maintain his third position on the general classification podium. Pidcock currently leads Australian Jai Hindley by 32 seconds, with Vingegaard trailing the overall standings by 48 seconds.
Vingegaard, however, claimed the six bonus seconds in the race, extending his lead at the top of the general classification. The Dane had a pulsating battle for the bonus seconds with Almeida and Hindley, but ultimately emerged victorious.
Ahead of the Farrapona climb, Soler made a daring attack to take a solo lead, leaving behind a group that included Almeida, Vingegaard, and Hindley. His win increases UAE Team Emirates' dominance in the race, with the team having won seven out of the 14 stages so far.
The team has also won each of the last four stages, a testament to their formidable performance this year.
There was some disruption during the neutralized start as riders slowed to a halt to travel down a narrow road lined with people waving Palestinian flags. This incident comes after Israel-Premier Tech team announced they would be using only their logo on their kit, dropping their team name, due to frequent pro-Palestinian protests.
As the race continues, it's worth noting that around 30 riders escaped the peloton after 22 kilometers, with the gap growing to six minutes with 60 kilometers remaining. The race is scheduled to continue on Sunday in Galicia with the medium mountains stage 15, stretching 168 kilometres from A Veiga to Monforte de Lemos.
In a post-race interview, Soler expressed his excitement, saying, "It's unbelievable... I cannot explain, 50 percent of the stages in the Vuelta we won, it's amazing." Almeida, on the other hand, praised Vingegaard's strength, stating, "He's super strong."
As the race progresses, it will be interesting to see if UAE Team Emirates can continue their winning streak and if Vingegaard can maintain his lead in the general classification. Stay tuned for more updates from the Vuelta a España 2025.
