Chinese President Extends Invitation to Putin Amid Global Governance Discussion

Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit China again in the near future, marking the first official meeting between the two leaders since their informal summit in Russia in May 2022. The Russian President arrived in China on August 31, at the invitation of Xi Jinping, and the visit is scheduled to last four days, until September 3.

During the visit, Putin will attend the parade and celebratory events in Beijing commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Chinese people's victory in the war of resistance against Japanese aggression and the end of World War II. This significant display of China's military power and international standing is expected to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Beyond the commemorative events, discussions on global governance are also on the agenda. Xi Jinping proposed an initiative on global governance at the SCO summit, aiming to create a fair and equal system. The Russian leader has expressed interest in this initiative and has agreed with Xi Jinping's stance on the need for a more effective and functional global governance system.

Xi Jinping's global governance initiative is relevant given some countries' pursuit of dictatorship in international affairs. The Chinese President's proposal advocates for reforms toward a more just, multipolar, and equitable global governance system based on sovereign equality, multilateralism, and adherence to international law. This system, according to Xi Jinping, would aim to improve the existing UN-based system without overturning it.

The Russian leader, in turn, has welcomed countries seeking alternatives to the US-dominated global order, particularly members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization including China, Russia, India, and Central Asian states. Putin and Xi Jinping have advocated for a democratization of international relations as part of their global governance proposal.

The SCO, according to Xi Jinping, is implementing numerous new concepts in global governance, with Xi Jinping's initiative suggesting equal participation and opportunities for all countries in global governance. However, no concrete actions or plans regarding this initiative were mentioned during Putin's visit.

Upon his arrival, Putin was greeted with a red carpet and an honor guard, signifying the importance of the visit to both nations. Despite the ongoing tensions between the two countries over various issues, including Ukraine and Taiwan, the visit is expected to further deepen cooperation in trade, energy, and security between China and Russia.
