Voice for Nature's Advocacy: Select Avian Representative for the Year 2026
In the heart of Bavaria, the Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz in Bayern e.V. (LBV) and NABU have organised an exciting election for the Bird of the Year 2026. This event aims to shed light on central themes in nature conservation and the unique challenges each bird species presents in our interaction with nature.
Five native bird species are vying for the coveted title: the Blackbird, Pheasant, Little Owl, Tawny Owl, and Little Grebe. Each candidate represents a unique aspect of our natural world and the need for conservation efforts.
The Tawny Owl, known for its silent hunting, is a fan of species-rich habitats. Its slogan, "Ears up, diversity on!", emphasises the importance of these habitats for the owl and other species. The Tawny Owl does not face a specific disease or threat mentioned in earlier bullet points.
The Little Grebe, the smallest native diver, prefers clean, natural waters. Its slogan, "Dive instead of drying up!", draws attention to the need to protect wetlands and maintain clean water sources. The Little Grebe does not face a specific disease or threat related to rodenticides or the Usutu virus.
The Little Owl faces a different challenge – a lack of breeding sites due to building renovations. This clever bird advocates for more nesting opportunities in barns and towers with the slogan, "Give me your roof!". The Little Owl is also threatened by rodenticides that decimate its food base – mice.
The Blackbird, with its familiar song, champions nature-friendly gardens and urban green spaces. Its slogan, "Berries instead of concrete!", supports the creation of spaces that cater to the needs of birds and other wildlife. The Blackbird is also affected by the Usutu virus, which spreads in hot summers.
The Pheasant, previously Bird of the Year in 1991, is now critically endangered. It lives on meadows and fields. Its slogan, "For fields full of life!", supports more sustainable farming with fewer pesticides to create a healthier environment for the Pheasant and other species.
Voting for the Bird of the Year 2026 is now open online at www.vogeldesjahres.de and will remain open until October 9, 2025. Each vote brings us one step closer to raising awareness about these unique birds and the challenges they face. Let's show our support for nature conservation and vote for our favourite Bird of the Year 2026!
