Volkswagen reveals preview images of a compact electric Sports Utility Vehicle
Volkswagen has confirmed the introduction of a new compact electric SUV, named the ID. Cross, at the beginning of the year. The announcement was made during the ID. Cross Concept's premiere ahead of the IAA in Munich.
The ID. Cross is designed to combine the spaciousness of a Golf with the affordability of a Polo, aiming to appeal to a wide range of buyers. The SUV's design includes a continuous light strip at the front and rear, as well as a roof rack, giving it a distinctive and prominent appearance.
A first teaser of the ID. Cross was released at the end of 2023, offering a sneak peek into the vehicle's design. A concept drawing has since been released, providing a better glimpse of the compact electric SUV. Spokesperson Stefan Voswinkel shared images of the design on his LinkedIn account.
The technical basis for the ID. Cross will be the entry-level electric car kit MEB, similar to the ID.2all. The compact electric SUV is a sister model to the ID.2all series version announced for 2026.
Volkswagen announced that the ID. Cross will serve as an electric replacement for the current T-Cross. Customers will have a choice between two battery sizes: 38 or 58 kWh. The larger battery option (58 kWh) is said to offer a range of up to 450 kilometers according to the local WLTP standard.
Inside, the ID. Cross is expected to feature a 12.9-inch infotainment system and a 10.9-inch driver display. The compact electric SUV is designed to be front-wheel drive and powered by a single motor.
The new compact electric car is set to start at an entry-level price of around 30,000 euros. While the ID. Cross has been referred to as the ID.2X, Volkswagen may choose a different final name for the production model.
The Wolfsburg-based company is also planning a small car known as the ID.1, expected to cost around 20,000 euros. This small car is expected to become the entry-level electric cars for long, pushing the ID. Cross slightly up the price range.
The production version of the ID. Cross is expected to surpass the ID.2all concept in terms of design and functionality. The ID. Cross represents Volkswagen's commitment to providing affordable and efficient electric vehicles to a wide range of customers.
