Volkswagen's top executive deems the suggested name change for ID 3 to ID Golf as an error.
Volkswagen is set to return to using classic model names for its upcoming electric vehicles (EVs), with the ID Polo and ID Cross set to join the lineup. The announcement was made by Thomas Schäfer, the boss of Volkswagen, who also hinted at significant changes being made to the ID 3.
At the IAA in Munich in September 2025, a camouflaged version of the new VW ID. Polo was first shown, with its official world premiere planned for May 2026 and market launch expected in autumn 2026. However, the ID 3 will not be named ID Golf, despite being the closest equivalent in Volkswagen's internal combustion engine (ICE) line-up.
Schäfer stated that the changes being made to the ID 3 are mainly in the interior, with a first-step facelift already received and a whole new interior expected. He described the exterior of the ID 3 as a "phenomenal package," but emphasized that it's a mistake to call something something it's not.
The ID Cross is another model that will use a classic Volkswagen name. Both the ID 3 and ID 4 will move onto the upgraded 'MEB Plus' platform. Schäfer indicated that the application of these names will depend on the models, and suggested a more consistent naming approach for future models at Volkswagen.
Schäfer also mentioned that the ID Polo is a true Polo in proportions, looks, feel, and drivability, and deserves the name. He described the ID 3 as a "fantastic car to drive." Familiar topics like the GTI will also have names true to their DNA.
The ID 4 is internally referred to as the ID Tiguan at Volkswagen, and both the ID 3 and ID 4 are undergoing heavy updates. Schäfer stated that Volkswagen has enough names in its portfolio, both old and new, to use for various models. He emphasized that don't underestimate the changes being made to the ID 3.
Overall, it appears that Volkswagen is taking a more consistent and clear approach to naming its models, with a focus on preserving the DNA of its most iconic models. The new ID Polo and ID Cross are set to join the lineup in the near future, with the ID 3 and ID 4 undergoing significant updates.
