Corrientes Forges Ahead with Local Elections Ahead of National Vote

Preparations are underway in the Argentine province of Corrientes as the region gears up for local elections on August 31, 2023. This early vote comes before the national elections scheduled for October 26.

A total of 2,808 polling stations will be opened across the district, with Correntinos set to elect a governor and vice-governor, five provincial senators, and 18 provincial deputies. Additionally, mayors and council members will be chosen in 73 municipalities.

In a significant shift, the current radical governor, Gustavo Valdés, who has been in office for two terms, is ineligible to run for re-election due to term limits. This change opens a new political landscape in a province where the ruling party has held a strong grip in recent years.

The provincial electoral system includes the possibility of a runoff. If the leading candidate does not secure more than 40% of the votes, or if the margin between the top two candidates is less than 10 points, a runoff will be held.

It's worth noting that Corrientes is not the only province to have held its local elections separately from the national ones. In recent years, former governor Ricardo Colombi served three terms before the 2025 elections, with Gustavo Valdés succeeding him in the 2025 election and then being followed by his brother Juan Pablo Valdés.

The provincial election is part of the 2025 electoral calendar, marking an important milestone in the democratic process of Corrientes. As the campaign season heats up, the people of Corrientes eagerly await the results that will shape the future of their province.
