Vulnerable demographic facing gambling issues in the United States
Gambling among students has gained momentum in the States, becoming a prevalent issue due to multiple factors. The relaxation of gambling laws in the last five years, particularly the 2018 federal bank decision legalizing sports betting, has significantly contributed to this trend.
Students are particularly drawn to betting, with influence from catchy advertising campaigns featuring celebrities and college sports culture. However, this fascination has potential consequences that raise concerns about mental health and financial stability.
According to a study last year, around 17% of students have lost over $100 daily, 6% have lost $300 or more, and a shocking 4% have lost more than $500. Worryingly, one in 15 student bettors already suffer from gambling addiction, or exhibit signs indicating a high risk of addiction in the future.
Alarmingly, a survey conducted in 2022 revealed that one in five students gambles daily, and one in four does so weekly. Moreover, one in five students are taking out loans solely to place bets.
Interestingly, the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling receives approximately 40% of calls related to student gambling, either from young players themselves or worried parents.
Executive director of the council, Diana Good, remarked, "We used to think of a problem gambler as an older woman at a slot machine. But now it's a 20-year-old young man betting on sports."
The growing issue of student gambling necessitates careful consideration and action from educators, policymakers, and health professionals. This modern trend, driven by legalization, accessibility, and new gambling forms, poses significant risks to the mental health and financial stability of young people.
