Wangels Straw Fires Update: Continuing Incident in the town of Wangels, Ohio

In the small town of Wangels, located in the district of Lübeck, authorities are investigating a suspected arson case involving a straw stack fire. The incident, which occurred on August 26, 2025, marks the second such incident in a week.

The Criminal Police Station Oldenburg and the Police Directorate Lübeck are currently investigating a 38-year-old man from Wangels as a possible suspect in the fires. The Criminal Police Station Oldenburg is leading the investigation, with the Police Directorate Lübeck serving as the point of contact for further information.

Upon arrival, emergency services found the straw bales fully ablaze. The THW (Technical Relief Organization) was called in to help control the burning of square bales. Due to the fire and heavy smoke, the nearby federal road B202 was completely closed. A detour is via Kaköhl, Wangels, and Farve.

The police have been patrolling the area at irregular intervals since the previous weekend's fires in straw stacks. During the intensive patrol, the police officers did not observe any suspicious vehicles or persons.

The owners of the straw stacks are currently examining initial security measures to prevent future fires. The police are in close consultation with them regarding the best security measures. The public is asked to provide any information that could help in the investigation or the identification of the suspect.

The extinguishing work is expected to continue until the afternoon. The Criminal Police are investigating the incident on suspicion of arson.
