"War Tales by Bernhard Schulz: Finding No Peace"

On Tuesday, September 2, the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Center, in collaboration with the Literature Office West Lower Saxony, will host an event featuring the presentation of a new book titled "Peace Not in Sight - A Learning and Reading Book" by Bernhard Schulz. Admission to the event is free.

The event will begin at 7 PM and will include a reading of excerpts from the book, followed by musical accompaniment provided by Georgian pianist Giorgi Dolidze.

"Peace Not in Sight" is considered to be Bernhard Schulz's life's work, containing the sum of his war stories. The book is a collection of short stories, narratives, selected field post letters, and previously unpublished World War II caricatures by Fritz Wolf (1918-2001).

Bernhard Schulz, who served as the feuilleton editor of the newspaper Neue Tagespost for many years after returning from American captivity in late summer 1946, expressed his disdain for the war while serving as a soldier of the German Wehrmacht. His letters and stories provide a journey into and out of the war, and they express a strong desire for peace.

In the foreword of the volume, author Maria Regina Kaiser writes that Schulz's records, stories, and letters express a strong desire for peace. She suggests that reading "Peace Not in Sight" is a necessary catharsis.

Throughout his life, Schulz lamented the effects of militarism on him, still smelling gunpowder in the curtains and hearing distant cannon fire. Fritz Wolf's caricatures, which were previously unpublished, add a poignant visual element to the book, capturing the horrors and absurdities of war.

The event will be a unique opportunity to delve into the powerful and moving stories of Bernhard Schulz, accompanied by the beautiful music of Georgian pianist Giorgi Dolidze. We hope to see you there.
