Warnings of hefty rainfall have been issued for certain regions within Switzerland
Central and eastern Switzerland are bracing themselves for a week of unpredictable weather, with a level 4 out of 5 weather alert issued due to the increased risk of flooding and mudslides. According to MeteoSchweiz, intense downpours and thunderstorms could repeatedly hit the same regions in the southern Alps for several hours.
The foehn, a dry wind, will hold back the rain in these areas, creating a complex weather pattern. On August 27th, heavy rain is expected across Switzerland, with Ticino and Graubuënden expected to be particularly affected. The municipalities of Sumvitg, Lugnez, the Valser Valley, and the Rheinwald region could receive up to 150 litres of precipitation per square metre between August 27th and August 28th.
As the cold front approaches on Thursday and passes through, areas affected by the foehn will also experience heavy rain. The amount of rain that the new cold front will bring is difficult to estimate at this point, according to MeteoSchweiz.
The weather is not expected to settle until Saturday. After Sunday, August 31, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are likely to be exposed to strong rain following the passage of a cold front. Particularly notable precipitation and strong western winds are expected between August 31 and September 3. Repeated showers and thunderstorms may occur through September 8, with southern Germany experiencing more frequent rain around early and late September, but without large amounts.
MeteoSchweiz has warned that the alert could be extended to other regions depending on the evolution of the forecast. The southern Alps face a particular risk, with the worst-case scenario involving the region. The same heavy damage as in the summer and autumn of 2024, which occurred in Ticino and Misox, could recur.
It's important to note that precipitation will be less intense north of the Alps. MeteoSchweiz has also warned that a new cold front, originating from an Atlantic low, will reach the Alps as early as Sunday.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing weather situation. It's crucial for residents in the affected areas to stay informed and prepared for potential flooding and mudslides.
