Warrant issued for the detainment of an individual suspected of backing the Islamic State, a recognized foreign terrorist group

Akhmad E., a Russian national, has been in custody since his arrest at Berlin Brandenburg Airport on February 20, 2025. The arrest warrant was issued by the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice, following investigations taken over by the Federal Prosecutor's Office from the General Prosecutor's Office of Brandenburg.

The charges against Akhmad E. are related to supporting a terrorist organisation abroad and preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state. He is also accused of attempting membership in a foreign terrorist organisation, specifically the Islamic State (IS), under sections 129a Abs. 1 Nr. 1, Abs. 5, and 129b Abs. 1 of the German Criminal Code (StGB).

The arrest warrant was initially issued by the Brandenburg an der Havel Local Court on 21 February 2025, due to suspicions that Akhmad E. had supported a terrorist organisation abroad as a juvenile, attempted membership in a foreign terrorist organisation, and prepared a serious act of violence endangering the state. These allegations are based on his support for the IS ideology, as evidenced by his translation of IS propaganda material into Russian and Chechen.

On 20 February 2025, Akhmad E. intended to travel to the IS operational area, join the organisation, and receive military training. His last known location was the Berlin Brandenburg Airport, where he was arrested before boarding a flight to Pakistan.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office can be contacted at Dr. Ines Peterson, Prosecutor at the BGH, located at Brauerstr. 307, 6135 Karlsruhe, Germany. Contact information includes telephone: 0721 8191-4100, fax: 0721 8191-8492, email: [email protected], and website: www.generalbundesanwalt.de.

The arrest warrant of the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice replaces that of the Brandenburg an der Havel Local Court. Akhmad E.'s case is a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and protect the safety of the state and its citizens.
