Water sources activated in the city
The city of Halle (Saale) has recently seen a revival of two iconic fountains, the Great-Buna Fountain and the Cactus Fountain, following restoration efforts.
The Great-Buna Fountain, standing tall at a height of eight meters on Merseburger Street, was completed in 1964. It was the creation of Fritz Kuhn, a renowned Berlin blacksmith and metal designer. After years of neglect, the fountain has been restored under monument preservation aspects, with the city footing a bill of approximately 15,000 euros. The fountain now operates daily from 11 am to 10 pm.
Meanwhile, the Cactus Fountain in Halle-Neustadt has also been reactivated. This 1983 installation by local sculptor Peter Michael, located at Carl-Schorlemmer-Ring, was created during his tenure at Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle from 1961 to 1966. The fountain, made of fired clay bricks and ceramics, had been out of commission for several years due to construction damages and vandalism. The repair process not only restored the fountain but also saw the repaving of its surroundings. The cost of the repair was approximately 50,000 euros.
The children of the neighbourhood immediately embraced the reactivated Ceramic Fountain in Heide-Nord last week. This is the only water game in the district, originally installed and repaired by the city of Halle. The ceramic fountain was created by the artist Eva-Maria Gries and the city paid around 3,700 euros for its repair and installation. The fountain, which was damaged by vandalism on New Year's Eve, has been operating since its repair.
These restorations mark a significant step towards preserving Halle's cultural heritage while providing enjoyable public spaces for its residents and visitors alike.
