In the third volume of Wolfgang Reinisch's "Tales of the Meier Family," a curious event unfolds as the character Jakob Meier visits a fortune teller. The poem detailing this encounter, titled "The Visit to the Fortune Teller," paints a picture of Mrs. Meier, Jakob's wife, who is left bewildered by the fortune teller's prediction about her umbrella being stolen.
The fortune teller, after reading Mrs. Meier's hand, foretells multiple misfortunes for her. However, the fortune teller also expresses sympathy for Mrs. Meier, stating that she carries a heavy burden. In an unexpected twist, the fortune teller informs Mrs. Meier that her umbrella will be stolen, but offers a glimmer of hope in the form of a dry day. The fortune teller states that it won't rain on the day her umbrella is stolen, suggesting that this non-rain is a positive aspect.
Mrs. Meier, however, questions the benefit of her umbrella being stolen. She expresses despair about the fortune teller's predictions of misfortunes, and is left perplexed by the paradoxical nature of the prediction. Despite the ominous forecast, the poem ends on a note of intrigue, leaving readers to ponder the outcome of Mrs. Meier's misfortunes and the significance of the stolen umbrella.
