Weimer's gender proposals face opposition from Brosda

In a recent announcement, the management of the Hamburg State Opera, Brosda, revealed that a decision on the successor of the current ballet director, Demis Volpi, will not be made this year. Instead, an ensemble will be involved in the selection process, ensuring a comprehensive and collaborative approach.

This news comes as Brosda also announced a careful selection process for Volpi's successor, aiming to find the best candidate to lead the esteemed ballet company. The delay in the decision is likely due to the meticulous nature of the selection process, as Brosda seeks to find the right person to carry on the legacy of the ballet company.

Meanwhile, the opera in Hafencity, Hamburg, is embroiled in a contentious renovation debate. The opera renovation issue is a point of contention in the city, with some advocating for expensive renovations to the Dammtorstraße building, and others supporting the Kühn Foundation's new building project.

The new opera house in Hamburg is owned by the city after completion, based on a contract signed in February 2025. The Kühne Foundation covers all construction costs beyond a capped contribution of €147.5 million from the city. The project is managed by a project company involving the city, the Kühn Foundation, and Hamburg State Opera. Upon completion, the foundation’s shares and the opera house will be donated to the city.

The city parliament is set to decide on the opera renovation project this fall. Funding decisions for culture will need to be weighed more carefully due to tightening budget constraints. However, it's important to note that there are no planned cuts to the cultural budget, suggesting that the city remains committed to supporting the arts.

As the selection process for Volpi's successor unfolds and the opera renovation debate continues, it's clear that the cultural landscape of Hamburg is undergoing significant changes. These decisions will shape the future of the city's arts scene, and the community eagerly awaits the outcomes.
